Heroes: Cop, Good Samaritan Rescue 12-Year-Old Boy From Icy Long Island Canal
A man extended a shovel that the boy held onto until help arrived, police say.

BABYLON, NY- A Suffolk County Police officer and a good Samaritan rescued a 12-year-old boy who fell into a canal in Babylon Monday afternoon.
According to police, the boy was walking along the docks behind Fire Island Avenue and Cedar Lane when he slipped and fell into the water around 4:35 p.m. First Precinct officer Kristen Derkevics responded and along with a good Samaritan, pulled the boy out of the water.
Before Derkevics arrived, the good Samaritan, who police say was an adult male, extended a shovel that the boy held onto.

The boy was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
