Man Charged With Stealing Car, Crashing Head-On Into Cop: Police

The 30-year-old was driving the stolen car while on drugs and with no license, police say.

WEST BABYLON, NY - A West Babylon man was high on drugs when he stole a car and crashed into a police vehicle, seriously injuring an officer in West Babylon Tuesday morning, according to Suffolk Police.

Louis Mancini Jr., 30, stole a 2013 GMC Yukon from Frank’s Delicatessen on 1018 Little East Neck Road at 11:15 a.m., police said.

Half an hour later, Mancini was driving at a high rate of speed northbound on Straight Path when he lost control of the car and crashed head on into a police car traveling southbound on Straight Path, police said.

The officer, who police did not identified, had to be extricated from the car and transported by the North Babylon Fire Department to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow.

He suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Mancini was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with non-life-threatening injuries.

He was charged with DWAI by drugs, first degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, second degree assault, and third degree grand larceny.

Mancini is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
