BABYLON, NY — A male teacher at Babylon High School was relieved of his responsibilities on Monday for “disturbing allegations” made about him, officials said.

Superintendent Linda Rozzi stated in a letter yesterday that an internal investigation is currently underway after learning about the allegations made about an employee.

"The district does not tolerate misconduct and takes all allegations of such very seriously," said Rozzi. "Due to privacy laws, school districts are limited in the information we can release regarding this matter."

Rozzi continued to say that "the employee in question was immediately reassigned to home."

Suffolk County Police told Patch that the First Precinct was contacted by representatives of the Babylon School District at about 6 p.m. on Monday "referencing a letter district officials released earlier that day."

Officers are currently investigating, police said.

While Rozzi did not list any specifics about the employee or the allegations, the news sparked an emotional response from the community.

A group of Babylon High School alumni created a Change.Org petition titled on Monday titled: "Babylon School District Must Protect Survivors" and gained more than 1,000 signatures overnight. Due to "harmful comments," the organizers shut the petition down Tuesday afternoon.

This is a developing story.
