A Little Snow, A Lot of Rain in This Week's Forecast

Flooding may be an issue on Long Island.

A pair of weather systems will bring unsettled weather to the region, mostly in the form of rain, over the next few days, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature hit 50 degrees at Long Island MacArthur Airport on Monday afternoon, but things will cool down on Tuesday, with the high temperature expected to be around 38 degrees. On Tuesday afternoon, there will be a chance of snow, but just a coating to a half-inch of accumulation is expected.

That snow will pretty quickly turn to rain in the evening and then it will just keep raining for a long time. In more precise terms, the NWS says rain is likely on Long Island from 6 p.m. Tuesday until 11 a.m. Thursday. The heaviest rain is expected Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.

More than an inch and a half of rain will likely fall across Long Island before things dry up Thursday afternoon.

“Strong south to southeast winds will push Atlantic Ocean water toward Long Island and the southern coast of New England with the risk of minor coastal flooding at times of high tide during Wednesday night,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said.
