Loud Boom Shakes Long Island

Police say there is no evidence of an explosion.

Suffolk Police received around a dozen 911 calls Tuesday evening from residents, mainly in the Town of Babylon, reporting a “noise disturbance.”

Several people have reported hearing a loud boom around 6:07 p.m. Some residents say the boom shook their homes.

It is not clear what caused the noise.

“The incident is under investigation however there is no evidence of explosion at this time,” police said.

Residents in the following towns have told Patch they felt it: Babylon, Blue Point, Copiague, Lindenhurst, Massapequa, Dix Hills, Amityville, Fort Salonga, Deer Park, North Babylon, Sayville, Ronkonkoma, West Babylon, West Islip and Islip. "I was just about to begin cooking dinner and I had just lowered the shades," Copiague resident Ilisa Guittard said. "Then I heard this loud boom. I thought the neighbor's rent a storage unit had blown up- it felt that close. I opened the window and took a peek and I didn't see anything. I honestly thought nothing of it!"

In January, a sonic boom shook parts of Long Island.
