New Babylon Village Law Targets Reckless Bicyclists
The new law would allow officers to confiscate bicyclists from youths who are seen riding "recklessly." What do you think of this new law?
BABYLON VILLAGE, NY - The Village of Babylon Board of Trustees unanimously passed a new law this week that would punish those who ride bicycles recklessly within the village.
"As we are all aware, neighborhoods and communities throughout our country have been experiencing youths scheduling 'ride outs' on bicycles to victimize pedestrians, terrorize children and place everyone whether driving or walking, including themselves in 'harm’s way' that is not only extremely dangerous, it can be potentially deadly," Mayor Ralph Scordino wrote in a message to the community. "This is unacceptable in the Village of Babylon."
The new law, known as Local Law 6, would allow local Code Enforcement officers as well as Suffolk Police officers to seize and impound the bicycles of those seen riding recklessly.

"I would like to assure all our Babylon Village residents and guests, this is not a game of 'playing chicken,'" Scordino wrote. "The incidents with these youths on bicycles is dangerous and when it comes to the safety of our Village residents, children and guests, it is a matter that I and the Village Board of Trustees take very seriously."
The law comes after residents complained about the reckless bicyclists at a recent public meeting.
According to the complaints, there have been incidents of pedestrians being harassed, some knocked down onto the streets, obscenities being shouted and people being spit on.
Residents also reported seeing bicyclists almost cause risk accidents, weaving in and out of the roads, banging on car windows and yelling at drivers.
