Police Refute Rumor Of Shooting At West Babylon High School

BREAKING: Social media reports of a shooting are false, police say.

UPDATE: Superintendent Yiendhy Farrelly released the following statement: "This afternoon, a false and anonymous report was made to the Suffolk County Police Department of a shooting within West Babylon Senior High School. Please be assured, there has been NO such occurrence in any of our district buildings and all of our students and staff are safe. As a precautionary measure, there is police presence and additional security guards throughout the school district. The first precinct is currently investigating the source of the false allegation. This is a very serious matter and the district will fully cooperate as the police continue their investigation. The safety and security of our students and staff continue to be our highest priority. Thank you for your continued concern, understanding and support."

Rumors of a shooting began circulating online around 11:45 a.m. But a police spokeswoman told Patch "there was no shooting."

A person in the area of the school on Great East Neck Road told Patch she didn't see any police at the school.
