Car Found Floating in Great South Bay

The discovery early Sunday triggered a huge search effort, but the car was determined to be unoccupied.

BAYPORT, NY – A car was found floating in the Great South Bay early Sunday, triggering a search effort by multiple agencies.

Suffolk County Police Fifth Precinct officers responded to a 911 report of a car in the water approximately 50 feet off shore from South Gillette Avenue in the bay at approximately 1:35 a.m.

Police officers, Emergency Services Section officers, police helicopter and the Bayport Fire Department responded to the scene. The car was determined to be unoccupied. A search of the water for possible occupants of the vehicle yielded negative results.
