Saturday Snow Predictions Go Bust

Apparently Mother Nature has remembered it's April. Snow is still likely on Long Island, but much less than earlier forecasts.

If you were actually looking forward to several inches of snow this weekend, we have some bad news: the National Weather Service has drastically cut its projections for snowfall on Long Island.

Just a half-inch of snow is now likely for most of the island on Saturday, according to NWS snow total maps. The East End could see an inch of snow accumulate. That's a far cry from the 2-4 inches the NWS was predicting Thursday morning, but we don't expect many Long Islanders to be complaining.

"The current track brings in some warmer air on a east to northeast flow Saturday and light snow at the start is expected to transition to rain during the day," the NWS says. "As the low moves east and colder air filters back into the region, rain will transition back to snow."

The temperature will drop below freezing on Saturday night and blustery winds mean wind chill temperatures will likely be in the teens.

Here's the full forecast:

Friday- Partly sunny, with a high near 53. Breezy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph.

Friday Night- A slight chance of snow after 3am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 35. West wind 9 to 14 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Saturday- A chance of snow before 9am, then rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 43. Wind chill values between 30 and 40. East wind 8 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Saturday Night- Rain and snow likely, becoming all snow after 9pm, then gradually ending. Cloudy, with a low around 28. Blustery, with a northwest wind 16 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Sunday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 44.

Sunday Night- Cloudy, with a low around 37.
