W. Babylon Students Celebrate St. Patty's Day & Reading

Students combined St. Patrick's Day and literature together into one celebration.

Second-grade students of Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District recently turned a St. Patrick’s Day celebration into a celebration of literature.

Students took part in a class reading of “Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato,” an Irish folktale written by Tomie dePaola. The class explored the genre further, discussing folktales and comparing the book to similar stories they had read throughout the year.

The second-graders also discussed the book’s characters and brainstormed a list of other tales that included a mischievous leprechaun. They enjoyed sharing their own stories about leprechauns that have visited their houses and classrooms in the past. In a culminating activity, the students worked diligently to create their own leprechaun masks.
