NORTH BELLPORT, NY — With marijuana legal in the state for medicinal and recreational use, the state is planning to accept applications for as many as 20 dispensaries on Long Island.

Osbert Orduna, from North Bellport, who runs The Cannabis Place, wants to have a shop in Suffolk County.

One way people can take ownership of a dispensary is by acquiring a Conditional Adult-Use Recreational Dispensary license (CAURD). That license is tied to being "justice-involved." Those applications are for people convicted of a marijuana charge before March 2021.

"The individuals would need to have two years of successful business experience demonstrated by financial documents," Orduna told Patch AM.

While the state's Office of Cannabis Management is targeting the 20 shops for Long Island, they would need to be in Suffolk County.

"All of the towns and municipalities within Nassau County have opted out, so there is nowhere for an aspiring entrepreneur to potentially go and start a retail cannabis business," he said.

There are only four areas in Suffolk that will permit the sale of cannabis: The Town of Babylon, Town of Brookhaven, Riverhead and Southampton.
