West Babylon 6th Graders Bring Book Characters To Life Through Art
Sixth graders combined reading, writing and creativity to analyze favorite novel characters.
WEST BABYLON, NY — Reading truly came alive for sixth graders at West Babylon Junior High School, who recently completed imaginative “body biography” projects as part of their English lessons.
After reading book club novels such as Unplugged, The Maze Runner, Percy Jackson, and Ungifted, students selected a main character and brought them to life through art and analysis. Using full-body outlines, each student examined their character’s personality and motivations, filling different sections of the figure with meaningful quotes, physical descriptions, likes and dislikes, accomplishments, strengths, values, goals, and challenges.
Each area of the body symbolized a unique aspect of the character, encouraging students to think critically about development, decision-making, and inner thoughts. The project blended reading comprehension, writing skills, and artistic expression, giving students a creative way to demonstrate their understanding of the novels.
