West Babylon Man Menaces Driver With Gun, Then Crashes Into 2 Cars After Blowing Red Light While Fleeing Officer: Police

The incident began on the Southern State Parkway Tuesday night, police say.

A 26-year-old West Babylon man faces several charges after being arrested in Freeport Tuesday night, Nassau Police said.

Daniel Longo is charged with two counts of second degree menacing, fourth degree possession of a dangerous weapon, reckless driving, and several other traffic violations.

According to police, a 35-year-old man was driving west on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 13 in Valley Stream when his car was tapped multiple times in the rear by a 1999 Hyundai Tiburon driven by Longo.

When the victim exited the parkway and was stopped on Linden Boulevard, Longo pulled alongside the victim’s car and pointed a black handgun at him, police said.

The victim, in fear for his life, attempted to drive off, but continued to be followed by Longo, police said.

The victim then drove onto Elmont Road and then eastbound onto West Merrick Road, where Longo again pointed the gun at him, police said.

At the intersection of West Merrick Road and South Franklin Avenue in Valley Stream, the victim saw a Fifth Precinct police officer and was able to report the ongoing incident, police said.

The officer observed Longo’s vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but Longo refused to stop, police said.

The officer continued to follow the vehicle eastbound on Merrick Road. At the intersection of Merrick Road and Henry Street in Freeport, Longo drove through a red light and collided into two vehicles, police said.

The officers were able to place Longo, of 902 14th Street in West Babylon, under arrest at 11:35 pm.

No injuries were reported to anyone involved in the crash or to the 35-year-old male victim, police said.

A black Phantom BB 4.5 mm caliber handgun was recovered inside Longo’s car, police said.

Longo will be arraigned on Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
