As part of a schoolwide outreach initiated by the fifth-grade student council, students and staff members at West Babylon's Santapogue Elementary School donated a variety of items to the Care Packages for Soldiers collection drive.
Student council members gathered the names of soldiers abroad who are connected to the Santapogue community, and accumulated a myriad of items that would provide those soldiers with some of the comforts of home. Donations included toiletries, hand warmers, air fresheners and a variety of ready-to-eat goods. The boxes were assembled by the student council members and included student-crafted cards and thank-you letters.
“The soldiers do so much for us, and we wanted to give back,” said student council president Allison Cella. “They are all connected to our community in some way, so we wanted to give them things to show them we remember them at home.”
