Winter Storm Watch For Babylon As Snow, Bitter Cold Expected Sunday-Monday

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect as officials warn of heavy snow, possible sleet, and very cold temperatures this weekend.

BABYLON, NY — Town of Babylon officials are urging residents to prepare as a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for late Saturday night through Monday afternoon, with forecasts calling for 6 to 12 inches of snow, the potential for sleet or freezing rain, and dangerously cold temperatures.

According to the US National Weather Service, New York snow is expected to begin early Sunday morning and intensify through the day, with snowfall rates possibly reaching 1 to 2 inches per hour Sunday afternoon. Widespread accumulations of 8 to 12 inches, and locally higher amounts, are possible, forecasters said.

Meteorologists said parts of Long Island — particularly along the South Shore — could see snow mix with sleet at times, which may reduce total snowfall amounts but increase the risk of icy conditions as temperatures remain below freezing throughout the storm.

During active snowfall, officials said the priority will be keeping roads passable for emergency vehicles, with full cleanup operations beginning once the storm subsides.

Residents are asked to move vehicles into driveways by Saturday night, as cars left on roadways can hinder snow removal and slow emergency access.

Officials also encouraged residents to limit travel if possible, plan ahead, and allow crews the space they need to clear roads safely and efficiently.

Before the snow arrives, a cold weather advisory remains in effect Friday night into Saturday morning, forecasters said.

Very cold temperatures and wind chills are expected, with wind chills potentially dropping to minus 5 to minus 10 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Officials warned that prolonged exposure to the cold could lead to frostbite or hypothermia.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, wear hats and gloves, check on elderly neighbors and family members, and ensure portable heaters are used safely. Officials cautioned against using generators or grills indoors.

Forecasters said the heaviest snow is likely from Sunday morning through early Sunday evening, and residents should consider delaying travel into Monday if possible.

Town officials said they will continue monitoring conditions and sharing updates as the forecast evolves.
