88-Year-Old Man Rescued After Falling Into Collapsed Cesspool

The man was weed whacking in his backyard when a cesspool collapsed, creating a sinkhole.

NORTH BAY SHORE, NY — Suffolk police rescued a man after he fell into a collapsed cesspool in North Bay Shore Monday afternoon. The 88-year-old man was weed whacking in his backyard on Bancroft Road when a cesspool collapsed, creating a sinkhole.

The man fell into the hole and held his head above the contents of the cesspool by holding on to the electrical cord from the weed whacker. He was found a short time later by his wife, who called 911 at 5:25 p.m.

Officers used an emergency life ring to keep the man afloat. Within minutes, officers pulled the man out of the hole, which was expanding, at 5:34 p.m.

The man was transported via to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
