South Shore University Hospital Names New Chief Of Pediatric Surgery

BAY SHORE, NY — South Shore University Hospital has appointed Dr. Richard Scriven as chief of pediatric surgery, expanding access to advanced surgical care for children on Long Island’s South Shore, Northwell Health announced.

Scriven, a longtime Suffolk County pediatric surgeon, specializes in minimally invasive procedures, which can offer children smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery when appropriate, hospital officials said.

He joins Northwell Health after 25 years at Stony Brook University Hospital, where he cared for thousands of children and helped train future surgeons. Scriven has also been recognized by Newsday as a Top Doctor of Long Island for 15 consecutive years, from 2012 through 2026.

At South Shore University Hospital, Scriven will work with multidisciplinary pediatric teams to provide surgical care from evaluation and surgery through follow-up, hospital officials said. His appointment is expected to strengthen the hospital’s pediatric surgical services and give families closer access to specialized care.

“Dr. Scriven is a highly respected surgical leader who brings his decades of wisdom and technical excellence to expand our mission to provide world-class care for children across Long Island,” said Dr. José Prince, pediatric surgeon-in-chief at Northwell. “With his deep roots in Suffolk County, he is the perfect surgeon to bring to life the new operating rooms at SSUH to serve the children in the region.”

Scriven treats congenital and acquired conditions in newborns, children and adolescents. His areas of expertise include neonatal surgery, emergency surgical care for children, pediatric surgical oncology and common surgical conditions, such as hernias and undescended testes, hospital officials said.

He is also a national expert in pediatric trauma and serves as a reviewer for the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

In addition to minimally invasive procedures, Scriven will support emergency and elective pediatric surgical services in coordination with Northwell Health’s broader continuum of care, hospital officials said. He will also work with care management and outpatient teams to support referrals, follow-up care and family-centered education.

“I grew up in Suffolk County and raised my five children here, so caring for families on the South Shore has always been personal to me,” Scriven said. “I’m honored to join the Northwell team and excited to bring minimally invasive pediatric surgical options closer to home for our patients.”
