Bay Shore Schools Honor 9/11 Survivors, First Responders On 25th Anniversary

BAY SHORE, NY — Students and staff across the Bay Shore School District marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with commemorative ceremonies, recognition of military personnel and first responders, and a special tribute at the varsity football team's first home game of the season.

Two ceremonies featured Bay Shore resident Ken Summers, a survivor of the attacks, who shared his firsthand account of Sept. 11 with students. His story offered a personal perspective on the events of that day, bringing a pivotal moment in American history to life for students who were born years after the attacks.

The district's Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steven J. Maloney presented Summers with a certificate of appreciation for his willingness to share his experience.

Students throughout the district also invited family members who have served or are currently serving in the military or as first responders to participate in commemorative events.

At Brook Avenue School, students waved American flags as part of the remembrance. Fifth Avenue School and Mary G. Clarkson School also held events recognizing first responders invited by students.

The commemorations continued on the football field, where the Bay Shore varsity football team honored members of the community for their military and first responder service during its first home game of the season.

District alumni who have served in the military or as first responders were invited to serve as honorary captains for the game's coin toss.

The team also presented commemorative game balls to representatives of the Bay Shore Fire Department, Bay Shore-Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance and Suffolk County Police Department in recognition of their service to the community.

The district's events brought together students, educators, alumni, military personnel and first responders to remember the lives lost on Sept. 11 and recognize those who continue to serve their communities.
