Suffolk Man Pleads Guilty In Connection With Raping 12-Year-Old: DA

He assaulted the girl four times between November and December 2021, before her mom found out he had been calling her, DA says.

BAY SHORE, NY — A Bay Shore man has pleaded guilty to first-degree rape for sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl, Suffolk prosecutors say.

Omar Stevenson, 44, assaulted the girl on four separate occasions from November 2021 through December 16, 2021, said prosecutors, citing court filings and his admissions, adding that "the crimes were discovered when Stevenson called the victim during the early morning hours after the last attack, but the victim did not answer the call."

Her mother discovered the ringing phone and confronted Stevenson as to why he was calling the child, according to prosecutors.

The mother then discovered inappropriate text messages between Stevenson and her daughter through the child’s social media account, prosecutors said, adding that the girl was taken to the hospital "where she underwent an evaluation, and evidence was collected. "

Stevenson’s DNA was found on the clothing that the girl wore during the last assault, prosecutors said.

District Attorney Ray Tierney said that while Stevenson's "reprehensible actions can never be undone," adding, "hopefully this plea will bring some sense of closure to the child."

“The defendant is expected to serve a substantial prison sentence for his actions, ensuring that he is separated from both the victim and the community," he said.

Stevenson is due back in court on Jan. 17.

He is expected to be sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment followed by 15 years of post-release supervision.

His attorney, Howard Lee of Brooklyn, declined to comment.
