BAY SHORE, NY - The Bay Shore community is coming together to help the members of the Bay Shore Robotics Team as they head to the 2019 FIRST championship in Detroit later this month.

The Bay Shore Mechanical Marauders recently started a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe following their win at the Finger Lakes Regional. The team was part of the winning alliance with teams 870 and 3015.

As a result of this win, the team has qualified to attend the championship in Detroit from April 24 to April 27.

The competition is the world’s largest celebration of STEM for students, according to the FIRST website.

The event will bring together "tens of thousands of students from around the world who participate in our K-12 robotics programs – along with the educators, industry professionals, sponsors, organizations, and colleges/universities who support them – for a celebration of STEM inspiration and space exploration," the website reads.

However, before attending the competition, the team needs to raise a total of $10,000 so that every student that is on the team can afford to participate in the trip.

The total cost for 20 people to attend the championships is $18,500. But the team is hoping to raise a portion of that to allow more of the student members who may not be able to afford the expense to be able to participate.

The donations will go towards paying for a bus, hotel stay, and shipping the robots and supplies.

According to the page, the total cost is $7,500 for the bus, $8,500 for the hotel and $2,500 for the shipping.

"Please consider donating to our cause," the page reads. "Our students greatly appreciate any and all contributions as it will provide them with the means to attend an event that for many of them is a once in a life time opportunity."

As of Wednesday, the page has raised $1,970.
