Benjamins Beach Closed To Bathing

The local beach was shut down Monday due to the finding of bacteria.

BAY SHORE, NY - Two Suffolk County beaches were closed to bathing on Monday due to the finding of bacteria at levels in excess of acceptable criteria.

Benjamins Beach in Bay Shore and Sound Beach POA-East in Sound Beach were both shut down.

Terraces on the Sound in Rocky Point and Tanner Park Beach in Copiague remain closed.

Beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
