Man Charged With DWI After Fatal Crash: Police

A Central Islip man was charged with driving while intoxicated after his vehicle struck a pedestrian in North Bay Shore, police say.

NORTH BAY SHORE, NY — A Bay Shore man died after he was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver while crossing the street Saturday morning, Suffolk County Police said.

Darwin Contreras, 30, of Central Islip was driving a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee northbound on Fifth Avenue at 12:20 a.m. when his vehicle struck Dany Ibarra, 38, on Fifth Ave. in North Bay Shore, police said.

Ibarra was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

Contreras fled the scene and was later found by law enforcement, police said. He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and driving while intoxicated, police said.

Contreras will be held overnight at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday.
