50 Rescued After Bay Shore Restaurant Floods

Flooding inside the Lakehouse Restaurant trapped dozens. Rescue crews used a military truck to reach them. Check out videos.

BAY SHORE, NY — Firefighters and police officers rescued more than 50 people trapped in a Bay Shore restaurant that flooded Thursday night. Suffolk County Police responded to Lakehouse Restaurant on 135 Maple Ave. at about 9 p.m. The Bay Shore Fire Department also responded and helped lead people out of the restaurant.

Firefighters used a repurposed 5-ton military vehicle — which had been delivered to the Bay Shore fire department the day before the flood — to help rescue the people, with help from the West Islip Fire Department.

No injuries were reported.

A nearby restaurant, Whalers, also had some water inside, but the parking lot of the Lakehouse was most affected.

Electric and gas service was shut off to Whalers, Lakehouse and Chowder Bar. The Health Department was notified to inspect the businesses prior to reopening.

The Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance, Town of Islip Park Rangers and the Town of Islip Fire Marshal also responded.
