Teen Arrested After Jumping Off Ferry in Bay Shore: Police

BREAKING: The 17-year-old jumped off the ferry as it was approaching the Bay Shore terminal, police say.

BAY SHORE, NY — A Manhasset teen was arrested after jumping from a Fire Island ferry as it was approaching the Bay Shore terminal on Monday night, according to Suffolk Police.

The Fire Island Belle, an 80-foot ferry, was approaching the terminal at 10:20 p.m. when the 17-year-old jumped off the boat into Penataquit Creek, police said.

After the ferry was safely docked, Captain Victor Klipp Jr. guided the teen to a ladder, helped him aboard and detained him until police arrived, according to police.

The teen was not injured. There were 60 passengers and three crew members on board the ferry at the time of the incident.

The teen, who police did not name, was charged with disorderly conduct, police said.

Members of the United States Coast Guard Station at Fire Island also initiated an investigation into a violation of interfering with the safe operation of a vessel, police said.

The teen is scheduled to appear for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
