Woman Jumps From Bay Shore Overpass, Hospitalized: Police

The woman jumped from the Brook Avenue overpass above Sunrise Highway on Thursday afternoon, police say.

BAY SHORE, NY — Suffolk County police officers and Bay Shore Fire Department crews responded to a mental health emergency Thursday afternoon after a woman jumped from an overpass in Bay Shore, police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, officers responded to the Brook Avenue overpass above Sunrise Highway at approximately 2:17 p.m. on Jan. 8 after receiving reports of a woman in distress. Police said the woman was threatening to jump from the overpass and ultimately did so.

The woman was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

In a statement, the Bay Shore Fire Department said it assisted police at the scene and successfully deployed a safety jump mat moments before the woman jumped, breaking her fall.

Fire officials credited the coordinated response of firefighters and police officers with preventing more serious injuries. The woman was transported to the hospital by Bsy Shore-Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance, according to the fire department.
