Flushing Meadows Grant Program Offering $5K To Queens Artists

FLUSHING, NY — Queens-based artists have the chance to show their work in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, thanks to the city's "Art in the Parks" grant program.

For the second year, the Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park is awarding two artists $5,000 to create a piece for display in the iconic Queens park.

A committee of arts professionals, parks department representatives and Queens residents will select the winning proposals based on artistic and creative merit and suitability to the site, among other criteria.

The winning artworks will be installed in 2020.

"We are thrilled to continue working with local artists to activate underused spaces with more cultural programming,” Janice Melnick, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Administrator and Alliance Executive Director, said in a statement.

Last year's winners were the artists Yvonne Shortt and Karl Orozco.

Shortt's piece "Pavilion Landing" was inspired by the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, and Orozco's "Hospicio Cabañas" is a mosaic of heirloom corn kernels that depicts the stage for Thunder Hawk, the first Mexican video game character.
