The Bayside Historical Society's staff and volunteers are offering guided tours of The Castle and its exhibitions on the second Sunday of each month from 1pm-3pm. Each tour lasts approximately 45 minutes; two tours are offered, with the first beginning at 1:00 PM and the second at 2:00 PM. Admission is free, but reservations are required. The Castle in Fort Totten is one of New York City's finest surviving examples of Gothic Revival castellated-style architecture. Completed in 1887, the building originally served as the Officers' Mess Hall and Club for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers School of Application. Come explore this architectural treasure in Bayside and learn more about its fascinating history.

Join the Bayside Historical Society in celebrating our newest exhibit, which highlights the stories of Queens residents whose acts of service and sacrifice helped shape the American story.
Travel through time with us and discover 250 years of service, sacrifice, and patriotism by northeast Queens residents whose actions helped shape the American story. Long before the United States was founded, the people of Queens were advancing ideals that would come to define the nation: religious liberty, representative government, freedom of speech, and equality.
We are pleased to present stories of courage and service spanning from 1657 to the present day. From the growth of the Quaker faith and the pursuit of religious freedom, to the contributions of early American families, the work of George Washington's Culper Spy Ring, acts of courage during the Civil War, and sacrifices made on the home front during the World Wars, this exhibition highlights the lasting impact of Queens residents on our nation's history.
Join BHS as we explore overlooked stories from our shared past and celebrate 250 years of American freedom.

Home Front and Front Lines: 250 Years of American Service

As part of our commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, BHS welcomes acclaimed author and historian Richard F. Welch for an engaging look at the remarkable life of Benjamin Tallmadge, the Setauket native who became one of the Revolutionary War’s most important military leaders and intelligence operatives.
A trusted aide to George Washington, Tallmadge served on the front lines of the fight for independence while also helping to direct some of the Patriot cause’s most critical intelligence operations. From the Battles of Long Island, White Plains, and Germantown to daring raids against British positions on Long Island, Tallmadge distinguished himself as a cavalry commander, strategist, and expert in intelligence and counterintelligence. He also protected Patriot communities in Westchester from British and Loyalist attacks and led his own elite legion in combined land-and-sea operations.
Perhaps most famously, Tallmadge oversaw Washington’s most active espionage network on Long Island and in New York, playing a central role in gathering intelligence and helping expose the Arnold-André conspiracy to surrender West Point to the British.
The presentation will also explore Tallmadge’s impressive postwar career as a successful businessman and member of Congress, revealing how his influence extended far beyond the battlefield.
About the Author:&nbsp;Richard F. Welch received his doctorate in history from Stony Brook University and taught American history at Long Island University and Farmingdale State College. He served as editor of Long Island Forum from 1991 to 2014 and was a contributing editor of the Journal of Long Island History. The author of seven books and numerous scholarly articles and reviews, his most recent work is Long Island’s Gold Coast Warriors: The North Shore Elite and World War One (2021). He also contributed to the Encyclopedia of New York State and served as a trustee of the Suffolk County Historical Society from 2008 to 2024.
