Bayside Historical Society

For our first Passport Concert event of the fall season, the Bayside Historical Society is thrilled to welcome tango teacher, instructor, choreographer, and organizer Silvana Brizuela-Weigel for a lively afternoon of dance instruction, performance, and cultural history.
Along with her partner, Juan Alessandrini, Silvana will demonstrate the graceful and passionate movements of the tango. Guests will learn some beginning steps and then have the chance to try out their new skills on the dance floor. Silvana will also share the history of this renowned musical genre and its 19th century origins in Argentina.
Admission is $10 for BHS members and $15 for non-members. Light refreshments will be served. Dance instructors Raquel Rubio and Brian Dumaual of Art2BeHuman will perform the irresistible rhythms of Brazilian Forró, then get everyone up and moving with a fun, beginner-friendly group class. No experience, no partner, no problem! Learn a few basic steps while discovering the story behind this joyful partner dance — born in northeastern Brazil in the late 19th century, Forró blends music, movement, and community, and it's just as alive and beloved today as it was then.

For the last century and a half, FDNY fireboats have played a vital role in protecting New York City’s waterfront. On Thursday, October 8, the Bayside Historical Society welcomes author and photographer David Rocco for an illustrated presentation exploring the history and evolution of these remarkable vessels.
With more than 500 miles of shoreline, New York City has long relied on specialized fireboats to respond to fires along the waterfront and aboard ships. Using historic photographs and images, Rocco will trace their development from the early wooden-hull tugboats to the highly specialized vessels that serve the city today.
Rocco has been involved in numerous historic preservation and cultural projects throughout the Hudson Valley and New York City. In 2023, he prepared the successful nomination that placed the retired FDNY fireboat John D. McKean on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places. He currently serves as Vice President of the Fireboat McKean Preservation Project.
The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and book signing.
