DOT To Place Speed Hump on 212th Street
Traffic measure intended to slow down vehicles near P.S. 169 and Bell Academy.

The city’s Department of Transportation will install a speed hump near two Bayside schools along 212th Street, a spokesman for Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, said.
The speed hump will be located along 212th street between 18th and 23rd Avenues, which is near and Bell Academy.
Steven Stites, a spokesman for Halloran, said several constituents had contacted the councilman’s office to complain of speeding vehicles in the area.

“There is a lot of foot traffic with pick ups and drop offs in the morning and afternoon,” Stites said.

The DOT has not yet specified when it would be installed.
Warren Schreiber, president of the said his group does not have a problem with the fact that the speed hump is being installed without community input, which is not required when a proposed locale is near a school.
But he said he was not sure if a speed hump would solve traffic problems near the schools.
“One of the problems at the schools is that parents double and triple park,” he said. “Adding a speed hump can’t hurt, but it might not be the solution to the problem.”
