“Blessed” and “poor” in the very same sentence? Chapter five of Matthew’s Gospel begins with that unexpected juxtaposition coming from Jesus himself. No wonder that when Jesus finishes the Sermon on the Mount, his audience is astonished at his teaching.
In this session, we will revisit the seemingly familiar words of the Sermon on the Mount to reflect on the many ways –between parables and paradox –in which Jesus can continue to surprise us.
