Family Talk: Baby Survives 8-Story Fall While Strapped to Mom

Sometimes, miracles do surface out of tragedies.

Last Wednesday Harlem resident Cynthia Wachenheim committed suicide by jumping out of an eight-story window and falling to her death.

Before taking the leap, Wachenheim strapped her 10-month-old baby boy, Keston Bacharach, to her chest in an Ergobaby carrier, the NY Daily News reported.

In what is being considered nothing short of a miracle, Keston survived the fall with minor scratches and bruises to his face.

The 44-year-old mother and attorney, who was in weekly therapy sessions and being treated with antidepressants, landed on her back, which appears to have saved Keston's life.

Missing her last scheduled therapy session, it is reported that Wachenheim committed suicide after an argument ensued between her and her husband.

Father and husband, 48-year-old Hal Bacharach, is admittedly grief-stricken and in disbelief over the ordeal.

Wachenheim's 13-page suicide letter expresses her guilt over incidents where Keston was injured in two separate falls.

While Keston was examined and medically cleared, the letter reveals that Wachenheim was convinced that her baby boy suffered from Cerebral Palsy due to the aforementioned incidents.

It is unfortunate that even while being under psychiatric care and on antidepressants, the unimaginable, self-inflicted act that took Wachenhein's life, and almost that of her infant son, was not prevented.

While friends claim Wachenheim did not suffer from postpartum depression, it is an obvious possible factor not to be ignored.

Having no choice but to look at the silver lining, Bacharach and family members on both sides are grateful that Keston is alive.
