Fire Forces Evacuation of Bayside High

Fire reportedly started in a classroom Monday morning.

A fire in a classroom at Bayside High School on Monday morning forced the evacuation of the building.

The fire started in a fourth-floor classroom at about 10 a.m. and was put out by 60 firefighters by about 11:30 a.m., according to a Queens Courier report. No injuries were reported.

Students were relocated to other schools in the area:

  • Students whose 4th Period Class was on the 1st Floor or Basement: I.S. 25 (34-65 192nd Street)
  • Students whose 4th Period Class was on the 2nd Floor: P.S. 41 (214-43 35th Avenue)
  • Students whose 4th Period Class was on the 3rd Floor: P.S. 159 (205-01 33rd Avenue)

Staff members accompanied students to each site and students are expected to be dismissed from the evacuation sites if they cannot re-enter Bayside High. No word yet on what caused the fire or if the high school will be open on Tuesday.
