Little Neck Residents Contending with Water Loss During Sewer Upgrade

Residents along Little Neck Parkway say long-term sewer project is 'not too bad, but annoying.'

A project to has been irking some residents living along Little Neck Parkway, who have been contending with noise and a day without water each week for the past month.

The city's project, which began in mid-July, includes building new storm water collection sewers, wetland plantings, adding new distilling basins and fixing water mains and storm sewers in Little Neck.

The upgrade, which has been taking place along several streets off Little Neck Parkway, is meant to prevent overflow into local waterways, said Susan Seinfeld, 's district manager.

But residents along the parkway have been complaining to CB 11 about some disruptions caused by the project as well as its duration. It is currently expected to be completed by October 2013.

"There's been a lot of issues over there," Seinfeld said. "They've had to close the water off and the pipes are very old. The water mains are 100 years old. A lot of people have had their water turned off and there have been some street closures, which has caused there to be less available parking."

Agnes Segalini, who lives on Little Neck Parkway, said her water has been shut off from 8:30 a.m. to about 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. one day per week for the past month.

"When you turn the water back on, it is brown or has no pressure," she said. "It's not too bad, but it's annoying. And it's loud. I'm used to there being peace and quiet around here."

Roy Mazzola, a neighbor, said residents have received notes on their door the day before water is scheduled to be shut off for the day.

"The most inconvenient part of it is the lack of water for the day," he said. "And when it comes back on, it's brackish."

The upgrades will take place along 34th Avenue between Brookside Avenue and Little Neck Parkway, 225th Street between 34th and 39th Avenues, Little Neck Parkway between 34th and 38th Avenues, 38th Avenue between 254th and 255th Streets and 39th Avenue between 254th and 255th Streets.
