BAYSIDE, QUEENS — A student was accused of having a fake gun after a report of an armed person at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School sent the Bayside school into a lockdown Friday.

The 16-year-old student was charged with possession of an imitation firearm after a school safety officer found a B.B. gun in his bag, a police source said. The misdemeanor charge carries a fine of up to $1,000 and/or up to a year of jail time, according to the city's administrative code.

Police received a 911 call just after 2 p.m. on March 15 about an armed person at the high school. The report prompted a soft lockdown, which applies when there is no imminent danger. School officials lifted the lockdown about 3 p.m., according to Cardozo High School's website.

"Due to federal privacy laws I cannot discuss disciplinary action involving one student," a spokesman for the Department of Education said. "We work with NYPD to ensure the safety of every school building."
