Whiz Kid: Kamya

One of the Grand Marshals in St. Mary's 7th Annual Walk

Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kids honoree.

Each week, Douglaston Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Nathan.Duke@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the information you see below, and a photo. Our next honoree is Kamya.

Accomplishment: Grand Marshal for the 7thAnnual Walk for St. Mary’s Kids

Kid's Key to Awesomeness: Kamya, a patient in St. Mary’s Pediatric Day Healthcare's (PDHC) after-school and weekend program in Bayside, never lets her disability get in the way of enjoying her childhood.

She is always eager to be a part of activities and has become a mentor to other patients, often helping them with their homework or during activities. Kamya joined 11 other St. Mary’s Kids to be grand marshals in the 7th Annual Walk for St. Mary’s Kids, which took place in late May at Belmont Park.

Kamya was chosen because of her determination and confidence. She continues to strive to accomplish her medical and rehabilitative goals. She recently learned to wheel herself to dinner and with the supervision of her physical therapist, she has also been able to use a walker for short distances. Kamya’s goal is to be able to use her walker through the entire day, and she is working hard to accomplish just that.
