Back-To-School Giveaway Coming To Bed-Stuy

Council Member Robert Cornegy Jr. will include a school supplies giveaway at his weekly "Wellness Wednesday" event at Restoration Plaza.

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — Families looking to stock up on school supplies before the start of the year can stop by a giveaway in Bed-Stuy's Restoration Plaza on Wednesday.

Council Member Robert Cornegy Jr. will hold his annual "Book Bag Giveaway" at the plaza along with his weekly "Wellness Wednesdays," a food and hand sanitizer giveaway started amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The back-to-school part of the giveaway will include a book bag and school supplies for families who come by with their student. The event will run while supplies last from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to a flyer.

Families can also take part in raffles, fill out their voter registration or 2020 Census and pick up PPE or food while they're at the plaza. Cornegy also plans to discuss New York City's upcoming tax lien sale, which will impact his district more than most areas of the city.

"The press conference Wednesday will highlight the perversity of the tax lien sale, scheduled for September 4th, nearly coinciding with the start of the new school year – and further highlight the harm that would be done to Brooklyn families were the tax lien sale to go ahead," Cornegy's office said in a release.

Cornegy joined in a letter to the mayor urging the deferral of the 2020 tax lien sale and has supported state-level legislation postponing the sale.

Those who stop by the event should wear a mask and practice social distancing.
