Bed-Stuy Food Pantry Will Open Temporary Coronavirus Warehouse

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — A Bed-Stuy food pantry continues to step up to meet rising need caused by the new coronavirus outbreak.

The Campaign Against Hunger will open a new temporary warehouse Friday to serve as a distribution hub, a release states.

The pantry initially strained as demand spiked during the outbreak's early days. It has since expanded, received high-profile visits from Mayor Bill de Blasio and other politicians and now sends off about 2,000 bags of food a day.

It has served more than 188,000 people and provided enough food for over 1.89 million meals since the pandemic began, a release states.

“I have never seen such wide-spread need in my over 20 years of serving vulnerable communities," said Melony Samuels, the pantry's founder, in a statement. "We can serve the city;
we can impact positive change amidst COVID-19. I strongly believe that no one needs to go hungry in New York City."

The new warehouse space was donated by Broadway Stages and is located at 101st Street and Foster Avenue in Canarsie.
