Cat Stuck in Brooklyn Candy Store for 6 Weeks: Report

"Sheshe" is sometimes heard faintly meowing from within.

Jimmy’s Stationery and Toys — a little house of vintage candies and Bed-Stuy institution for 40 years — was evicted from 406 Tompkins Avenue on May 27.

But when the new landlord locked the place down, someone was reportedly still locked inside: Jimmy’s cat, Sheshe.

Deborah Leary, the candy-store owner’s daughter, tells DNAinfo that their building management company agreed in legal paperwork to keep the cat alive.

”Supposedly some guy has been feeding the cat, maybe three times since June,” she says. “Some people said they heard it crying from inside the gate. But for all we know, it’s dead by now.”

Jimmy Leary, now 78, is a legend on Tompkins Avenue. A few years ago, Rides blogger Christopher Benton called his shop a “museum of curiosities and old candies like Squirrel Nut Zippers, Mary Jane and Black Cow. There are two wooden phone booths in the front of the store that have had the payphones removed but now provide a nice perch for the official store cat.”
