DIVAS for Social Justice hosts first STEAM Awards in Bedford Stuyvesant!

On July 26, 2013, DIVAS for Social Justice celebrated their first ever STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math) Awards ceremony. The ceremony celebrated the work of 11 youth who participated in the Robotics After-School Program and STEAM Camp

On July 26, 2013, DIVAS for Social Justice celebrated their first ever
STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math) Awards ceremony. The
ceremony celebrated the work of 11 youth who participated in the
Robotics After-School Program and STEAM Camp this summer.

The youth in the program exhibited their work at the Macon Public
Library for the community to see. The STEAM Camp participants
exhibited a Food Landscaping Photography Project of DeKalb Ave.  ,
Lego Mindstorms Robots that fight obesity through exercise while
integrating the new technology of LittleBits and produced the STEAM
News Program live from Bedford Stuyvesant. 


Senator Velmanette Montgomery attended the STEAM Awards and graciously
spoke of the importance of encouraging children of color to be
involved in the information technology and engineering fields. The
Senator also expressed the importance of the community having high
expectations of our youth because they will rise to the occasion.
Senator Montgomery provided all of the participants with certificates
acknowledging their dedication to STEAM.  District Leader, Robert
Cornegy also stopped by in support of the youth and spoke of the
importance of bringing science and technology funding to Bedford
Stuyvesant.

DIVAS for Social Justice look forward to offering a STEAM enrichment
program throughout the school year. The organization was awarded a
grant by Emmanuel Baptist Church to continue to provide STEAM
Programming and support the Robotics team in competing in the First
Lego League Challenge 2014.
