Join the Hattie Carthan community market as they celebrate the Tastes of  South this Saturday in the community farmers market this Saturday. Across cultures, African, Latin, Caribbean and Southern, ingredients, cooking styles and cooking techniques bind the foods and the cooks together.  Tropical fruits and vegetables, chillies, okra, dark leafy greens, smoked or salted meats, fish and corn come in distinctive forms, stewed or fried across West African, Caribbean, and Afro-Brazilian cooking.  Many distinctive aspects of Southern cooking are centuries old in South America and parts of Africa.  Taste our rich food heritage!

Join us as people of different backgrounds gather to cook, eat, and commune around fresh food , farm animals and stories in the Hattie Carthan Community Market.  Organic Soul Chef Madea Allen- Gueye , our teenager youth chefs and The Soul Aces band will grace our market with soulful cooking demonstrations and live southern ballads as we explore our food, health, community and the intersection of all of these. 

Across the United and States, rates of obesity and diabetes are increasing dramatically, particularly within lower-income, African-American, and Latino communities. Growing research demonstrates that the low rate of consumption of healthy foods which drives disease rates is due to limited access to healthy choices. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is a community solution to the issue of poor nutrition and food insecurity in our community. 

The market is a community revitalization market project where conversations about food and farm issues happen and is a safe, multigenerational place for community socialization and healthy cultural activities.
