71-Year-Old In Custody For Bed-Stuy Synagogue Fire, Says NYPD

A second-alarm fire erupted on the roof of a Patchen Avenue synagogue around 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, an FDNY spokesman said.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — Police questioned a 71-year-old man about a suspicious fire in a Bed-Stuy synagogue Tuesday morning, officials said.

The fire erupted on the top floor of the synagogue at 45 Patchen Ave. between Greene and Lexington avenues around 9:10 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said.

A 71-year-old man was taken into police custody Tuesday afternoon and could face charges of reckless endangerment, police said.

Twenty-five units and 106 firefighters rushed to extinguish the second-alarm fire, said the FDNY.

Two firefighters received minor injuries extinguishing the blaze, police said.

Department of Buildings inspectors had cited the building for excessive debris on Oct. 4, city records show.

The Daily News reported in 2014 that B’Nai Adath Kol Beth Yisrael needed $4.5 million to make vital repairs to the building.
