GoFundMe Launched For Teen Killed On Bike In Bed-Stuy

Teachers described Kevin Flores as a natural artist with a warm smile. He wanted to apply to art school so he could become an architect.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — Teachers launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the family of Kevin Flores — the 13-year-old cyclist killed in a crash in Bed-Stuy this weekend — bury their son.

“Kevin was a remarkable young man with a shy smile and subtle sense of humor,” wrote teachers from Launch Expeditionary Learning Charter School, where Flores was a student. “[He] never failed to make his friends, teachers, and loved ones laugh.”

Flores was killed on Jan. 26 while riding his bike near Lewis and Jefferson avenues around 5:50 p.m. when an unlicensed oil truck driver crashed into him, officials said.

The Ridgewood teenager was remembered by his teachers as “a natural and talented artist” who was working to launch his own clothing brand, designing t-shirts and buttons.

Flores, who told his teachers he wanted to be an architect, was also building up a portfolio of artwork so that he could apply to the city’s “selective art schools.”

The GoFundMe campaign hopes to raise $10,000 to help the teen’s family pay for the funeral

“Our goal is that no financial needs should burden Kevin's family as they cope with this tragic loss,” the teachers wrote. They had raised $6,979 in less than 24 hours.

“Everyone who met Kevin was charmed by his warmth and easy going nature,” the teachers wrote. “He will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him."

The driver of the 2000 Mack oil truck, 28-year-old Philip Monfoletto, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.
