"It's a bitter-sweet day today,"ย said Lucita Petro-Nixon, Chanel's mother. "Finally we can see a light at the end of the tunnel. We have hopeย Chanel will get justice very soon."ย
Petro-Nixon, 16 at the time of her death,ย was last seen leaving her home onย June 18, 2006, according to authorities.ย

She told her familyย that she was meeting a friend โ later revealed to be Primus, who attendedย middle school with herย โย at theย ย Applebee's restaurant nearย Newย York Avenue and Fulton Street.ย
But the teenagerย never returned home. She was found four days later in a garbage bag outside 212 Kingston Ave., dead from strangulation, according to authorities.ย
He would up spending several years in prison after violating a restraining order,ย the New York Daily News reported, after which he was deported last yearย to the island ofย St. Vincent.ย
But once there, Primus allegedly committed two more shocking crimes. This spring, the 29-year-old suspect was charged with the November,ย 2015ย murder of local real-estate agentย Sharleen Greaves,ย asย reported by Pix11.ย
Local authorities said theย evidence behindย that charge was turned up whileย Primus was being investigatedย for another crimeย โย the four-month abduction of a 24-year-old woman namedย Mewanah Hadaway in early 2016,ย according to the St. Vincent news site iWitness News.
On Wednesday, Thompson, who praisedย community activists like theย Rev. W. Taharka Robinsonย for keeping interest in the case alive,ย said he reassigned Petro-Nixon's murder to a cold case squad last year in the hope of findingย new leads.ย
After Primus'ย April arrest,ย authorities in St. Vincent contacted New York investigators about the suspect,ย Thompson said,ย and two prosecutors with the Brooklyn D.A.'s office were dispatched to the island.ย
"It's not 'til we got thatย call fromย St. Vincent [that] we were able to get the key piece of evidence,"ย said Robert Boyce, the NYPD'sย Chief of Detectives, on Wednesday.ย
Thompson said the evidence needed for the indictmentย was collected "from different places,"ย but wouldn't go into further details.ย
Boyce alsoย noted that investigators are currently examining if Primus could be linked to other unsolved crimes.ย
Primus is currently being held in St. Vincentย awaiting his trial over the murder of Greaves, but Thompson said he wants theย suspect returned to the United States to stand trial in Brooklyn.ย
That process, however, is lengthy, and must run throughย the U.S. Department of Justice, the District Attorneyย said.ย ย
Thompson said he thinksย his office has enough evidence against Primus to secure a conviction for Petro-Nixon's murder, but added that he wants more.ย
He said aย rally will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 11 a.m. outside 212 Kingston Ave. to encourage anyone with knowledge of the case to step forward and share it.ย
"There is somebody here in Brooklynย that knows something,"ย said Lucinda Petro-Nixon. "No justice,ย no peace."ย
