Officer Honored for Contribution to Lives of Female Inmates

Correction Officer Tashara McFarlane, (left) an East Flatbush resident, was recognized recently by Department of Correction Commissioner Joe Ponte for her service in the Programs Division of the Rose M. Singer Center, the women’s jail at Riker’s Island. Officer Tashara McFarlane said:

“My goal is to keep the women out of trouble, and to show them, even though they are incarcerated, there’s so many things they can learn and do, which can help them when they return to society. I am not here to judge anyone, I am here to show them a positive way of thinking.”

Commissioner Ponte said Officer McFarlane “sets an example of what being a Correction Officer is all about.”
