Power Outage Strikes Bed-Stuy Following Winter Storm: Con Ed

Con Edison said crews have already been deployed to the area and that power will be restored as soon as possible.

BED-STUY, NY — Hundreds of Bedford-Stuyvesant homes lost power Monday morning after a fierce winter storm slammed New York City and much of the U.S. over the weekend, Con Edison officials said.

According to the company’s outage map, 786 customers across Brooklyn were without power as of Monday morning, with the largest cluster in Bed-Stuy, where more than 250 homes were dark and smaller pockets were scattered throughout the borough.

Utility crews are already on the scene working to restore service as quickly as possible, officials said, and residents are urged to use caution and monitor the outage map for the latest updates.

The outages, which began early Monday, are expected to be resolved by around 1 p.m., with some repairs potentially stretching to 5 p.m., officials said.

The disruptions are likely tied to the winter weather, as snow mixed with road salt can seep into underground electrical systems, causing damage and, in some past cases, forcing crews to shut off power for safety.

Con Edison officials said they are still investigating the cause of the Bed-Stuy outage and expect to provide more details later today.

The weekend storm dumped more than 11 inches of snow and sleet across the city, marking one of the heaviest hits New York has seen in years. And even as the flakes ease up, a blast of bitter cold trailing the system is expected to refreeze already slick streets, keeping travel treacherous well after the plows roll through.
