SuperFrench Shutters Bed-Stuy's Georges-André Vintage Café

Georges-André Vintage's owner is heading back to France and a natural wine bar will open in its place, according to SuperFrench and reports.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN -- A new natural wine bar will open in Bed-Stuy after SuperFrench, the owner of a beloved local cafe, decided to packs her bags and move back to France.

Georges-André Vintage Café at 558 Halsey St. permanently shuttered its doors on March 30, owner Karine "SuperFrench" Petitnicolas announced on Instagram.

"Who’s ready for the LAST SUPERFRENCH FIESTA?" the cafe owner wrote. "#BeYourSuperSelf."

While Petitnicolas' followers mourned the loss with many a no! and plenty of whys?, Brownstoner reports they can look forward to Kiki & Romeo, a small plates and wine bar run by Nadir Khelifi and Stephane Filippi, of Manny's Wine Shop down the block, which will open in Georges-André's place.

“We are super happy and excited,” Khelifi told Brownstoner.

The menu will feature small plates — think deviled eggs and foie gras — to pair with the natural wines sourced from, among other places, a Loire Valley vineyard that's home to two horses who give the new eatery its name, Brownstoner reported.

But the wine bar, which will only be open evenings to begin with, won't bring Bed-Stuy the slice of French cafe life SuperFrench has provided since she first opened Georges-André, where locals could enjoy a croissant, a game of chess, and (after she procured a liquor license in 2018) a glass of wine, in 2013.

"I think of the cafe as an extension of my living room," SuperFrench said of Georges-André Vintage Café. "I am like my mother in that way. Everyone wanted to be around her. She always had good advice and was just fun to be around."
