BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN -- Woodhull Hospital's overcrowded emergency care department will get a $5 million upgrade and expansion, officials announced this week.

The influx of cash means Woodhull will get 16 new exam rooms, an improved nurses' station and a transition hub to manage outpatient care by 2020, according to a press release from NYC Health + Hospitals.

Woodhull's 18,700-square foot facility, designed to provide treatment to about 65,000 a year, was ill-equipped to handle the 107,424 patients it cared for last year, hospital officials said.

Not only will the $5 million fund bring a needed 5,000-square foot expansion, it will also pay for new stretchers, portable EKG machines, telemetry monitors, vital sign paraphernalia and ventilators, said officials.

The cash comes from City Council's Brooklyn Delegation, which is chaired by Councilmembers Antonio Reynoso and Mark Treyger, according to the announcement.

“Woodhull Hospital is a lifeline for many residents throughout my district,” said Reynoso, who represents north Brooklyn.

"This allocation will enable the hospital to provide even greater care to a broader range of patients."
