WHAT: Disasters affect nearly one million people each year, yet 85 percent of Americans are unprepared for one. As the peak of the active Atlantic hurricane season arrives, Allstate agency owners will help raise awareness about the importance of being prepared and ensure local families are prepared if a disaster strikes. Community members are invited to pick up a free Allstate Foundation starter disaster preparedness kit on Oct. 3 at the Cortlandt Metro-North Railroad station beginning at 5 p.m. and on Oct. 4 at the Port Chester Metro-North Railroad station beginning at 5 p.m., while supplies last. The kits include a first aid kit, an emergency blanket, and a flashlight, among other essential items, including local resources from the American Red Cross to help prepare.

Through their volunteer efforts, Allstate agency owners have earned a $30,000 Allstate Foundation Helping Hands® grant for the American Red Cross Greater New York Region. The grant will help strengthen the organization’s ability to deliver critical emergency relief to families in need. Each year, thousands of organizations receive Allstate Foundation Helping Hands grants secured by Allstate volunteers for the nonprofits where they volunteer. The grants empower organizations addressing youth empowerment, domestic violence, disaster preparedness, hunger and other causes.
