Dalton struck first on a 40-yard option run but Harvey came right back, marching down the field and scoring on a 9-yard run by sophomore running back Teddy Little. Dalton scored again on a 35-yard pass, but Harvey looked primed to score and tie the game when the Cavaliers marched down to the Dalton 9-yard line. But a fumble in the backfield stopped the drive, leaving Harvey on the short end of a 14-6 score as the first half ended.

The Cavaliers got the game even in the third quarter when Harvey senior captain Ricky Hicks capped off a drive with a 4-yard TD plunge and Little made it into the end zone for the two-point conversion. But the tie did not last long as Dalton returned the ensuing kick-off 65 yards to put the visitors up 21 - 14.

In the third quarter, it looked like the Cavaliers were on their way to knot the score again, but their drive stalled at the Dalton 12-yard line with Harvey turning the ball over on downs. On the next play, the Dalton’s running back ripped through the middle of the Harvey defense and ran 89 yards for the score. Dalton scored again three minutes later on a 38-yard running play before Little finished the scoring for Harvey with a 48-yard TD run.

Harvey’s junior captain quarterback Tom Smith completed six passes for 67 yards and Hicks and Little rushed for a combined 251 yards and three TDs. The defense was led by senior captain Jared Finkel (five tackles, recovered fumble), junior captain Javen Stepp-Davis (four tackles, forced fumble), Little (five tackles), junior Joe O’ Connell (four tackles, forced fumble) and senior Dillon Singleton (four tackles). Senior Alex Bae and junior Mike DePass each had an interception.

Harvey is now 0-3 on the season.

Harvey Cross-Country Keeps Pace with Team Goal

It was a cool, rainy afternoon Wednesday, Oct. 1, in Litchfield, Conn. where The Harvey School cross-country team took on Forman, Chase Collegiate, Watkinson, South Kent and Christian Heritage in a 5-kilometer show-down.

The wet weather was a factor in the results as Chase’s Riley Rising came in first with a time of 18:55, almost a minute slower than his previous finishes. Harvey’s Samuel Mackiewicz finished fourth with a time of 19:48. Junior David Solano came in 32nd with a time of 24:05. Freshman Liam Miller finished in 37th with a time of 25:07. Coach Mike Lauria was pleased with the team’s showing. “All of the other Harvey boys came in under 30:00, consistent with the team goal for every race,” said the coach.

The girls started their race 45 minutes later, but it turned out to be just as exciting as the boys contest. Chase’s Megan Gimes came in first overall with a time of 26:39. Harvey’s Sadie Albert and Kate D’Avanzo came in 15th and 16th with times of 36:45 and 36:46, respectively. All other Harvey girls finished within 45 minutes.

Harvey Boys Soccer Blanked by Chase

Harvey’s boys varsity soccer team came up on the short end of a tight game at home against Chase, Wednesday, Oct. 1. The Cavaliers lost 2-0 in a hard-fought, defensive battle.

The Chase Highlanders struck first, taking advantage of a defensive mistake to strike the ball into the back of the net. Within 20 minutes, the Highlanders had their second opportunity, earning a penalty kick from a defensive handball within the 18. Despite junior keeper Zach Goligoski’s efforts for Harvey, Chase extended its lead to 2-0.

In last few minutes of the first half, the Cavaliers looked like they would get on the scoreboard, but junior captain Tyler Levy just missed a chance off a direct kick. Harvey senior captain Alfi Liendo came close to a scoring opportunity, but his chip at the goal keeper went just high, leaving Chase with the 2-0 lead at intermission.

In the second half, Harvey shored up its defensive efforts, continuing to play hard despite being down. Keeper Zach Goligoski saved 13 shots over 90 minutes, and the defense played with tenacity and better restraint, while Harvey’s midfielders allowed fewer turnovers. While the defense held Chase in check, Harvey’s offense could not score, and Chase held on to win, 2-0.
