Bedford Receives County Funds for Salt Shed Construction
The facility will help keep road salt from leaching into the groundwater.

Bedford, NY — The Town of Bedford will be getting a new salt shed facility.
Westchester County Legislator Francis Corcoran, R-Bedford, announced Tuesday that the Board of Legislators authorize the transfer of $175,000 from the East of Hudson Water Quality Investment Program to support the construction of the new shed on Adams Street in Bedford Hills.

According to information provided by the county, the facility is intended to contain the town’s road salt reserves which will prevent the salt from leaching into the reservoir.

The need for a salt shed facility had been of concern to the state Department of Environmental Conservation, though no formal action had been taken, a spokesman said.
A winning bid for the project has been approved, and the total cost will be $290,000.

Corcoran, who is chairman of the Board of Legislature’s Environment and Health Committee, said it was imperative that municipalities have materials necessary to keep roads safe and passable during the winter.
“The salt shed will provide protection from the road salt leaching into the groundwater and the nearby reservoir,” he said. “Conserving the high quality of our drinking water is one of the most important responsibilities of local governments.”
